Paul the Octopus Will Retire From Making World Cup Predictions

Something fishy going on here?

Paul, an octopus living in Germany, successfully predicted the outcome of Germany's seven games in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and even saw Spain winning it all by outscoring the Netherlands in the final match.

He can't speak (duh), so how he'd do it? He followed his gut. Literally.

Two boxes of food were placed in his tank. On the outside of each box was a flag of the country competing. When Paul didn't feast from Germany's box -- and they ended up losing -- angry fans sent recipes that included octopus meat and called for him to be cooked.

To simmer those flames, the Spanish prime minister promised Paul a team of bodyguards and the environment minister said this famous octopus would receive protection under conservation laws so he couldn't end up as someone's dinner.

But, alas, now that the World Cup has wrapped up, Paul can enjoy retirement. Octopuses generally don't live longer than two years, so he won't need to worry about angry fans putting a fork in him during the next World Cup.
