Are You Over Facebook or Still All About It?
Social networking is the norm these days, but a new survey shows that nearly one-fifth of teens who have a Facebook profile say they rarely visit the site or use it much less.According to the report by Roiworld, 45 percent of teens (ages 13-17) who have a Facebook account cite loss of interest as the reason why they don't use the social network anymore. Twenty-eight percent say they're more interested in other sites, while other teens say there are too many notifications and ads, and updating their profile became a chore.
Sixteen percent say they don't use the site because their parents are on it, and one in five teens say that most of their friends have bailed on the social network, too. But, while Facebook may not be as widely used as before, it's still the most popular social site for teens. YouTube comes in at a close second, and MySpace and Twitter follow right after at No. 3 and No. 4.
Are you surprised by the ranking or do you think the survey's results are spot on? Do you still use Facebook or are you more likey to be on YouTube, MySpace or Twitter on a regular basis?

Now that us "oldsters," 30 and over are now all over Facebook, the teens have moved on to wear they have less to fear from parents, relatives and neighbors who may stumble upon their personal musings.
When teens have something "cool" going, they interpret cool as being something that belongs to their generation. These same things lose their "coolness" when they are invaded by other groups they fear their space has been violated by and/or when the peers they look up to migrate on to something new - everyone follows them to the next thing.
I find it all very interesting. The early adopters of Facebook have grown up and the platform has become part of our overall cultural experience. Teens no longer feel it is still exclusively their doman and I think more than 16% really feel that way.

I thought this site was for kids/teens. Not adults...if you are one anyway.

i dont really see the point in having a facebook it just seems like a lot of work
antala4 Jul 9th 2010 12:06AM
Yeah I have a Facebook account as well, but I don't use it that much. Because I do not see the point using it all the time. I mean there is not that much to do on the social network, besides looking up old friends and other stuff that comes to mind.

I voted still all about it because I have always wanted a Facebook
Jamie Jul 10th 2010 8:30PM
Judging by my FB, there are still plenty of teens still spending lots of time there!

I have both a Myspace account and a Facebook account. Rarely use the Myspace account anymore. It's just too "teenish".
My family are all on Facebook. We live in different parts of the country. We can stay in touch daily and share all our wonderful family pic. I hate all the apps, but I just delete them.

Is it just me or is AOL way to preoccupied with Facebook? Every other day they seem to have a story with some negative information or derogatory comments. Come on AOL, give it a rest, move on to something else ...

I have never used face book and prob wouldn't. I noticed some of my places that I like to www on is offering face book free...this I do not like. I feel this is wrong of them to try to get you to sign up on some other spot that you have no intrest in.
Opihi Jul 11th 2010 5:54AM
I agree. I get so irritated when that FaceBook application pops up all over the place ... on almost every site I visit. They're much much too invasive and I don't trust them. Obviously they're tracking me because the ads on my home page reflect some of my interests. I removed my profile details.
Then I had a bit of fun with them by fiddling with my details. I put my age as 73 ... and then suddenly all the ads changed to spiels for wheelchairs and Depends .... too funny. Then I flipped the next day to beig a 16 year old and those ads disappeared.
My privacy is a major issue with me. And AOL violates it too on these mesage boards by creating a "profile" automatically when you first sign in to ANY AOL site. That profile also includes all comments you've made on ANY site. And it is accessed by a hyperlink under your display name.
Don't believe me??? Try it for yourself. Click onto your name.
AOL sets up that profile when you give your email address for "confirmation" ... this is so sneaky I can't imagine why they haven't faced legal challenges. At NO point do they inform you of that profile. I found out when my name suddenly appeared all over the internet ... effectively wrecking my life. LemonDrop fed that profile into Google Search and naively I had used my real name to sign in.
Sheaky .... invasive .... and legally questionable

I must have signed up for Facebook when it started and then totally forgot about it. About a year ago I got a message from a friend in Germany I had lost touch with. Since then I have connected with maybe a dozen lost friends. From that aspect it is great. As far as all the stupid games, quizzes, puzzles, etc. I really don't have time for them and they simply slow down and clog up the system. I prefer to just email or talk to friends. Oh well, I guess I am just an old fashioned fuddy duddy. I'll be 68 this month.

Facebook really is more for adults - it is a more mature site then my space - I have been watching both. there are a different ages on facebook but I think moreso mature adults rule the site.

Well, Facebook was not set up for young teens in the first place, it was meant for college age kids. The 'tweens' don't need to be on it all the time anyway, heck they all have cell phones now and should be using those or meeting in person. Their social skills are bad enough thanks to idiot parents, and being online all the time will not help to improve them. We old folks didn't have cell phone or computer technology in our younger days, some of us even in our college days. So that's why we are all on Facebook now to stay in touch with family, reconnect with old friends, and meet some new people with similar interests or beliefs from across the country and around the world. And, at age 54 I write & produce my own music from home which I proudly post on a Myspace band site. Age is not a factor there, as I have 470+ friends on ranging from age18 to 70. Oh, and I also post a few of my tunes using a 'widget' on my Facebook page. LOL

"Facebook", in and of Itself, is "Bad News"......
Lars Jul 11th 2010 1:16AM
Wow - facebook better watch out - or they could become as IRRELEVANT and USELESS as AOL...
Elizabeth Jul 11th 2010 1:59AM
Problem is, 13-17 year old havent been using it as long so they're not as invested in it as people slightly older. I'm 20 and have been using facebook for 3+ years and I may not do as much on it (in terms of games, apps, etc) but I'm still always on and it's still the best way to get in contact with my friends.
As long as it doesnt go the way of Myspace and become trashy, it'll be fine.

teenagers have always wanted to be different than their elders; we were the same way. strange, this "survey" only wanted to know how teenagers feel about using facebook. after all it aren't the teenies that buy the computers or pay for the internet access ... actually i don't know any teenagers that do use facebook, i only know people between 25 and 65 that do, and that seems to be the trend, lol
teenagers grow up and outgrow the adolescent sites and finally they end up on facebook and stay. so, facebook now seems to be more for "real" people. after AOL closed down in europe and therefore made communication with new aquaintances almost impossible, many people here have turned to facebook. as long as facebook don't turn to more childish apps (like aol did before and therefore drove users away), facebook will have a future and has the change to become an established feature in our society.
