'Avatar' Could Be Back to Earn More Bucks

Avatar's already smashed box-office records to become the highest-grossing domestic box-office release in U.S. history. With more than $600 million in ticket sales, you'd assume everyone's seen it on the big screen. Not so says the blockbuster's director, James Cameron. That's why he's toying with the idea of bringing Avatar back to theaters, even though the DVD drops on April 22.

James, who failed to take home the Oscar for Best Director and Best Film of the Year, tells USA Today, "[W]e might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It's kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result."

That's some major bank, but it's not a done deal that Avatar will be back. "The question is, '[Is] the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies?" asks the film's director. "We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative."
