'Alice in Wonderland' Breaks Box Office Records
Alice in Wonderland was a huge hit among moviegoers this weekend, and now Tim Burton can count it as his most successful film to date. The wonders of Wonderland were enough to score the film the No. 1 spot at the box office, earning $116.3 million in the U.S. and $94 million internationally for a total of $210.3 million worldwide.
The 3-D adaptation also broke the record for the highest opening weekend of any movie in 2010 so far, and the best-ever March debut, breaking the previous record of $70.8 million held by the 2007 film 300.
While the movie is still in its opening week, fans can already get psyched to own their own copy and DVR it when it airs on television. Disney intends to make Alice in Wonderland available on DVD at the end of May, and ABC Family just scooped up the TV premiere rights with plans to premiere the movie in 2012.
These days, movies are coming out on DVD just months after their theatrical release, but until 3D TV technology becomes more commonplace, the draw of 3D movies will still keep moviegoers coming.
